The first six months of your baby's life are full of little changes and new experiences. Every week, something new happens. As a parent, it’s completely normal to wonder, “Is my baby developing the way they should?”
Every baby grows at their own pace, but knowing what to generally expect helps you catch concerns early.
1 Month
At 1 month, babies mostly sleep, feed, and cry. They can also briefly focus on faces and react to loud sounds. You may notice your baby turning their head when they hear your voice.
2–3 Months
This is when you may start seeing some really exciting changes. Your baby may begin smiling back at you (social smile) around 6–8 weeks. By 3 months, you may hear little cooing sounds, notice them following moving objects with their eyes, and see them becoming more comfortable with tummy time.
4–5 Months
At this age, babies may start to reach for toys, laugh out loud, and roll from their tummy to their back. You may also notice them becoming fascinated by their hands and putting almost everything they can grab into their mouth.
6 Months
By 6 months, most babies can sit with support, respond to their name, and babble (ba-ba, ma-ma). They may also recognize familiar faces and get excited when they see their parents.
Talk to your paediatrician if your baby is not smiling by 3 months, not making sounds by 4 months, or not responding to familiar voices by 6 months.
Milestones are not deadlines. Every baby develops at their own pace, but paying attention early can make a real difference.
