It can be tricky to tell if a preschooler has ADHD because being wild, impulsive, and easily distracted is pretty normal at this age. But for some children, the behavior goes beyond what is typical and starts affecting different parts of their daily life.
If your preschooler's behavior is significantly harder to manage than other children their age, and it's been going on for months, that's worth exploring.
What ADHD Might Look Like in a 3–5 Year Old
• Can't engage in activities for more than a minute or two (even fun ones)
• Constantly climbing, running, or touching everything
• Explosive tantrums that last a long time and are difficult to calm down
• Gets kicked out of or warned frequently at nursery/daycare
• Can't wait their turn or follow basic rules in play
Can Preschoolers Be Diagnosed?
Diagnosis before age 4 is rare, but it can happen in some cases. Most professionals prefer to observe across time and settings before making a formal diagnosis. Behavior support and parent coaching can also begin without a formal diagnosis.
Even without a label, you can start getting support. Ask your pediatrician about behavior strategies or an occupational therapy referral.
