Like autism, ADHD in girls is widely underdiagnosed. The typical picture of ADHD, the hyperactive, disruptive boy, doesn’t always match how ADHD shows up in girls.

Girls with undiagnosed ADHD often grow up thinking they're lazy, stupid, or just "too much." They deserve better.

How ADHD Shows Up Differently in Girls

• More inattentive type, such as being dreamy, forgetful, or disorganised without being disruptive

• Lots of talking and socialising, which can sometimes hide difficulties with attention

• Strong emotions, such as being easily hurt, overwhelmed, or anxious

• Working very hard to compensate, then feeling exhausted at home

• More likely to develop anxiety or depression alongside ADHD

Why It Gets Missed

Teachers may describe girls with ADHD as "a bit spacey," "a daydreamer," or "could do better if she tried." These girls may not be referred for assessment because they aren’t causing trouble. But behind the scenes, they can be struggling enormously.

If your daughter is bright but disorganized, emotionally intense, and exhausted from school, explore ADHD. Don't wait for "bad grades" before seeking help.
